The reason I have been so intermittent with blog posts recently is due to two reasons... 1. Im not very organised, and 2. I have been travelling.
My husband took a very rare weeks leave from work to attend his brothers wedding. His brother and fiance are also in nature conservation and work near Hoodspruit. With their love of animals and nature they decided to have a true bush wedding, getting married in a private park called Marloth in Mpumalanga. My in-laws live in the private park, and the ceremony was held at a friend of theirs house. The reception was held at the local restaurant, aptly named Die Watergat. Marloth Park is on the border of Kruger National Park, and although it does not have any 'big' game, you can have sightings of lion etc from the border. In fact, on their wedding day the groom and his best men went for a walk along the border which looks on to the Crocodile river and they were lucky enough to witness a lion kill. They took it as a sign of good luck.
It was a beautiful wedding, they are both young (seems to be a new trend at the moment: getting married young?) and their love is awe inspiring. A beautiful ceremony that was non-denominational but with hints of Catholicism - the bride is Catholic, and it was important for her to have Communion. I walked away with renewed hope in the ancient custom called marriage.
Both the bride and groom had spent months in preparation, both being equally involved in decision making and decor. I found this so refreshing, so many weddings nowadays are left up to the bride to plan. A cute addition was their wedding favours... both the bride and grooms names start with M, so they gifted their guests with an aptly named, Mozambican beer called 2M (Duojem (Spelling?) is Portuguese). Luckily the Mozamican border is less than an hour from Marloth Park and so crates of the beer were easily attainable.
We spent the week helping with preparations and it was a great time to catch up with my husbands side of the family. We all live scattered across South Africa and only seem to see each other at special occasions, which is such a pity. The evening before the wedding we had a braai (BBQ) with over 300 prawns - deliciously juicy Mozambican prawns - what a feast!
All in all we had a wonderful time.
